SAS (Student Activity Station)

Established in 2008, SAS (Student Activity Station) has held activities on an ongoing basis to promote interaction between APU students and local residents. In 2019, the organization won the Prime Minister's "Youth of the Year who are Creating the Future" Award.
In 2020, SAS volunteers took advantage of APU's 20th Anniversary to launch the "BEYOND SAS" Project, and are planning online activities for interacting with local residents that can be held even during the pandemic.

Project Objective

People of all ages and racial backgrounds live in Beppu. The "BEYOND SAS" Project will plan activities where a diverse variety of participants can enjoy spending time together, and while doing so, will attain a better understanding of the area through viewing it from different perspectives. Together with participants, we will consider what Beppu would ideally be like in the future in order to revitalize the region. Furthermore, using these social activities as a starting point, we are aiming to plan content that will make it possible to eventually transition into voluntary interactions that occur on their own.

Concept: "Building People," "Building Community," and "Building Connections"

We conducted a survey on events for interaction with local residents that APU students can attend. We divided the event into three sessions, each with its own concept. The concept for the first session is "Building People," and we will create a space for communication through a talk session. We will "Build Connections" through the intercultural experience of a cooking class where participants can enjoy "a taste of Oita." Finally, we aim for APU students to get to know Beppu better and for each of them to contribute to "Building Community" through a bamboo crafts experience traditional to Beppu. Also, we will use photos solicited from APU students and Beppu residents during APU's 20th Anniversary to create a mosaic that expresses our gratitude to everyone in Beppu.
