Every year during the spring (May-July) and fall semesters (November-January), APU hosts a series of Multicultural Weeks. During each week the spotlight is put on one of the many countries and regions represented on campus and that country’s culture and language are introduced and celebrated through a range of student-led events and activities.
Between 100 and 150 students take a central role and work together to create each of the Multicultural Weeks. A feature of these Weeks is the fact that approximately a third of Week participants are not native to the Week’s featured country or region. These non-native students work under the guidance of native students to become expert ambassadors for their culture. Through this event students learn how to develop a greater sense of pride in their native culture and a greater respect for others, while also acquiring the kinds of skills sought in global human resources including mutual understanding and decision making skills, initiative and the ability to work well as part of a diverse team.
From June 10 until June 14, 2013, the inaugural Philippine Week was held at APU. During the week, a range of Filipino foods were available on the cafeteria menu on a daily basis including Adobo (Filipino style chicken and vegetable dish) and Kaldereta (Filipino style beef stew). June 12 marked Philippines Independence Day. This day of celebration included a parade of APU students in traditional costumes, dancing to the sounds of the APU wind orchestra, and more. The week came to an end with the Grand Show featuring traditional dance and song, a fashion show in collaboration with a renowned Filipino fashion designer, and much more.
Footage of the Grand Show was streamed live on the internet via Ustream. Please be sure to tune in and enjoy the colourful performances by APU’s multilingual and multicultural students.
In time for the Philippines’s celebration of its independence this coming June, Filipinos in APU decided to go bolder and larger with APU’s first full-blown Philippine Week celebration from 10 to 14 June 2013. Aligned with the Philippines’ Department of Tourism (DOT) campaign of virtually anything being “more fun in the Philippines,” we will make APU and the Beppu local community experience Philippine (Pinoy) fun.
We will kick-off the week with a forum on the Philippine economy, business and tourism sectors with a photo booth in the cafeteria exhibiting hot spots in the Philippines. Pinoy foods will also be featured in the cafeteria’s ethnic menu. Tuesday opens a two-day film festival featuring independent, commercial, historical and Hollywood films made in the Philippines. Expect a parade of grand show casts noontime on Wednesday. A harana (serenade) mini-concert night during Thursday will build the excitement for the much-awaited Grand Show that will start 6:30 P.M. on Friday. Watch out for Dita Sandico-Ong collection fashion show, singkil, pandanggo sa ilaw (dance of the fireflies), and of course, Original Pilipino Music (OPM). Come and experience fun the Pinoy way.
