Every year during the spring (May-July) and fall semesters (November-January), APU hosts a series of Multicultural Weeks. During each week the spotlight is put on one of the many countries and regions represented on campus and that country’s culture and language are introduced and celebrated through a range of student-led events and activities.
Between 100 and 150 students take a central role and work together to create each of the Multicultural Weeks. A feature of these Weeks is the fact that approximately a third of Week participants are not native to the Week’s featured country or region. These non-native students work under the guidance of native students to become expert ambassadors for their culture. Through this event students learn how to develop a greater sense of pride in their native culture and a greater respect for others, while also acquiring the kinds of skills sought in global human resources including mutual understanding and decision making skills, initiative and the ability to work well as part of a diverse team.
During the week July 15-19, 2013, Chinese Week – the last installment to this semester’s Multicultural Weeks – was held at APU. The week kicked off on Monday with a vibrant and powerful Chinese drum performance in front of a large audience followed by live band performances on Tuesday including Chinese and western pop music. A range of Chinese dishes were available on the Café menu including Kung Pao Chicken (Fried chicken and peanut) and Shuizhu (Spicy poached beef). Event-goers could also try on a traditional Chinese costume or taste a cup of Chinese tea. Held on the last day of the week, the Grand Show took place in the style of the Chinese film “The Banquet” and included a dragon dance, kung-fu display and many more impressive stage performances. With the conclusion of Chinese Week, the curtain came down on Multicultural Weeks for the spring 2013 semester.
More Multicultural Weeks are scheduled for the fall 2013 semester. Please look forward to them!
Footage of the Grand Show was recorded and streamed live on the internet via Ustream. Please be sure to tune in and enjoy the colorful performances by APU’s multilingual and multicultural students.
Over the years, Chinese Week has been committed to promoting Chinese culture at APU. We aim to use this week to provide people with various types of performances and displays, so as to create a truly Chinese atmosphere at APU.
Compared with previous years, we hope to introduce a wider picture of the cultures in China. Many people may not know that China is a country composed of 56 different ethnic groups. Every group has its own distinctive style but these cultures might not come to mind when foreigners think of Chinese culture. We will be introducing some of these cultures at our booth in the Cafeteria throughout the week so please feel free to come along!
One thing that makes Chinese Week 2013 stand out from previous years is the theme of our Friday night Grand Show. Unlike previous years which have focused on folk tales, myths or love stories, this year we will present the story of a royal prince’s revenge set against the backdrop of an ancient Chinese palace. We have added many new elements to the Grand Show, some of which you will seldom see performed, even in China.
There are many other events including live band shows, a dumpling-making workshop, Chinese cuisine on sale at the Cafeteria, and much more. Please check our week schedule for more details.
Welcome to 2013 Chinese Week. You won’t be disappointed!
