AP House 1・2 Common Areas

Individuals not living in AP House 1, 2, or 5 are prohibited from entering.

2. Entry Rules

3. Security Office

Security officers are in AP House around-the-clock, however, service between 00:30 and 6:00 will be limited to emergency situations. Facilities including AP Hall, AP Kitchen, and Meeting Rooms can be reserved here. Carts, vacuum cleaners, irons, and ironing boards can be borrowed for up to one hour at a time from the Security Office.

4. AP House Office

The AP House Office is located on the 1st floor of AP House 1 and is open between 10:00 and 16:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and open from 13:00 to 16:30 on Tuesdays. Staff members provide the following services to resident:

  • Provide consultations about life, problems, and concerns within AP House
  • Plan and conduct exchange events
  • Plan and conduct residential education programs
  • Support and train RAs (Resident Assistants)

5. Main Entrance

  • Residents use their Student Identification Card to open the inside door to enter the dormitory.
    The outside door is open 24 hours a day.
  • The inside door is automatically locked 24 hours a day.

6. Meeting Rooms

  • Submit a “Request for Using Facilities” to the Security Office in AP House 1 and receive a stamp of approval.
    (Reservations can be made up to 2 weeks in advance.)
  • Clean the room and return it to its original state after use.
  • Do not bother other residents.
  • Meeting Rooms in AP House 1 and 2 can be used to hold parties that involve food and beverages. Residents who wish to consume food and beverages in the Meeting Rooms are required to submit a written pledge to the Security Office in advance and put a large tarp down on the floor when using the room.

7.Study Rooms

  • Eating is not permitted in the room. Only drinks are allowed.
  • Study quietly. Please refrain from talking.

8. Recreational facilities and borrowing equipment

  • Residents can borrow equipment for Japanese chess (shogi) and playing cards from the Security Office.
  • Piano: Usage times is 24 hours a day. Please use headphones from 20:00 to 7:00.
  • Equipment can be used for up to one hour.

9. Communal Bathrooms

【Location】

1st Floor of AP House 1/AP House 2

* There is one communal bath in both AP House 1 and 2. Designated use rotates for males and females depending on the week.

【Registration】

Register to use the bath at the Security Office of either AP House 1 or 2

【Usage Times】
  • 17:00-24:00 (Register by 23:30 at the latest)
【Baths Closed】

Every Monday

Note: Do not bring speakers or cell phones to the baths.
Do not talk loudly as it bothers other residents and follow fundamental rules of etiquette such as returning items to their original place after use.

10. Outdoor Basketball Court (AP House 2 Courtyard)

  • There are no special procedures required to use this area, however, using the court outside of the designated time is prohibited.
  • Residents can borrow basketballs from the AP House 2 Security Office.
  • Use of equipment other than basketballs on the court is prohibited.

11. AP Kitchen

  • Submit a “Request for Using Facilities” to the Security House in AP House 1 and receive a stamp of approval.
    (Reservations can be made up to 2 weeks in advance.)
  • Clean the kitchen and return it to its original state after use.
  • Do not engage in activities that will disturb other residents.
  • Do not leave ingredients in the refrigerator after use.

12. AP Hall

  • Submit a “Request for Using Facilities” to the Security House in AP House 1 and receive a stamp of approval.
    (Reservations can be made up to 2 weeks in advance.)
  • Clean the hall and return it to its original state after use.
  • Do not engage in activities that will disturb other residents.
  • Residents who wish to consume food and beverages in AP Hall are required to submit a written pledge to the Security Office in advance and put a large tarp down on the floor when using the hall.

13. Communal Kitchens

Communal kitchens can be used from 6:00-24:00 excluding the 30-minute Kitchen Duty period from 22:30-23:00.
Quiet Hours are from 23:00 onward. If you will be using the kitchen during Quiet Hours, please do so in a manner that will not disturb sleeping residents.

  • Be careful to not disturb other residents. (Please be especially mindful of others if you are using the kitchen as a group.)
  • Clean up after you are done using the kitchen.
  • Keep all personal belongings such as cooling and eating utensils and ingredients in your own room.
  • Residents must do Kitchen Duty on their assigned days.
  • Take special precautions to prevent fires.

    * Do not leave the kitchen unattended while using the microwave oven, toaster, or IH stovetop. Be sure to check that the switch is turned off after use.

  • Electricity Capacity 15A (1500 W)
    Simultaneously using electrical appliances such as electric kettles, microwave ovens, hot plates, and toasters will cause the circuit breakers to trip. Residents are asked to make efforts to conserve electricity.

14. Private Showers

  • Do not leave personal belongings such as shampoo in the private showers.
  • Do not cut or dye your hair in the shower.
  • Do not disturb other residents by being loud or by taking especially long showers.

15. Laundry

Each floor is equipped with washing machines and dryers (¥100 per use).

There are money changers (that convert¥1,000 bills into ¥100 coins) in front of the Security Office in each AP House building.

  • Residents are asked to use their floor’s washing machine and dryers.
  • Take your clothes out of the washing machine or dryer promptly after you are done using it.※Residents that leave their clothes in the laundry room may be penalized.
    Please only use the detergent provided.

16. Mail

Mailboxes are located to the left of the main entrance.
A two-digit ID number is necessary to open your mailbox. Only regular postal items will be delivered to your mailbox.

17. Bulletin Boards (AP House entrance, each floor)

Notifications regarding information important for residents is posted on the bulletin boards. Please check the bulletin boards regularly to avoid missing this information. Permission is required from the AP House Office to hang posters on bulletin boards.

18. Entrances and Corridors

Do not open the emergency exits to enter or leave AP House. Entrances to private rooms and corridors will be used for evacuation in case of emergencies. Be sure to not leave personal belongings or garbage in these areas. Entering or leaving AP House through windows is prohibited.

19. Emergency Buttons

Emergency buttons are located in public areas such as shower booths and toilets.
This is not a button to turn on the light. Refrain from pressing the button unless it is an emergency.

20. Parking Areas

Bicycle and Motorcycle Parking Areas

Motorbikes must be registered with the University in order to be able to park it at AP House. The University will lock any unregistered motorbikes found parked in the parking area. Students who illegally park their motorbike in the vicinity of the university (Beppuwan Service Area parking lot, vicinity of AP House, etc.) will face severe penalties that could include suspension. Car Parking

Residents are not allowed to park their car in the AP House parking areas. Visitors who wish to use the parking areas for short-term parking are asked to inquire at the Security Office and complete the necessary forms. Please submit a request for a "Permit of Temporary Vehicle Entry" to the Security Office if you plan to use the AP House parking area when you are moving out of the dormitory, etc.

APU assumes no responsibility for any accidents or theft that may occur in the parking areas.

* Skateboards and Roller Skates at AP House
Due to the possibility of injuring students and causing damage to the roads or pavement, kick-boarding, roller-skating, skateboarding, using balance scooters, and other such activities are not permitted at AP House.

Residential Areas

【Important Notes】

Inspection of Rooms and Equipment

AP House and APU staff may enter residents’ rooms to inspect fixtures and furniture. Residents are usually notified of inspections through notices posted on the bulletin boards or other means, however, inspections may also be conducted without prior notice in emergency situations.

Precautions

  • Residents are responsible for the safekeeping of their money and valuables.
  • Residents should lock their door even when leaving their room for a short period.
  • Fixtures and furniture should be treated with care. Do not damage, re-decorate, or remove them from AP House.
  • Steel pipes are installed near the window and on the bed’s drop ceiling. These pipes are only for hanging clothes. Do not hang anything heavy from them.

1. Room Keys

Room keys are the responsibility of the resident.

  • Do not make a copy of your key or lend it to others.
  • If you lose your key, report it to the Security Office staff immediately.
  • Return your room key to the Security Office immediately after moving out.
  • Residents will be required to pay to have the locks replaced (around 10,000 yen) if they lose their key.
  • Doors to individual rooms do not automatically lock for security reasons. Please lock your door every time you leave your room.

2. Key Switch System

All rooms are equipped with a key switch system which turns on and off the lights, the air conditioner, and the hot-water device. Without the key, the electric current will run only to the refrigerator and the socket under the desk.
Insert and turn the room key in the mechanism on the wall by the door (i.e., the key switch) to turn the electricity on.
The electrical capacity is 15A(1500W)Simultaneously using electrical appliances such hair dryers and electric heating carpets will cause the circuit breakers to trip. Residents are asked to make efforts to conserve electricity.

  • *Residents should plug in the refrigerator when they move into their room.
  • *The switch to turn on the water heater is under the sink in single rooms.

3. Internet

Rooms are equipped with Wi-Fi service. The SSID and PW are on the router in your room. Residents should not open the bag and change the router settings. Changing the router settings can interrupt the Internet connection for the entire dormitory. Also, residents should refrain from using any other Wi-Fi except for the Wi-Fi that is provided by the university.

4. Air-conditioners

  • Residents should turn off their air-conditioner unit when leaving their room or when not in use.
  • APU will designate the period when air-conditioners can be used. Air conditioning switches to ventilation mode five times a day. Residents who want to use the air conditioner after the ventilation mode is finished need to turn the air conditioner on 30 minutes after the ventilation mode has finished. Check the bulletin board in the floor kitchen for the operation schedule.
  • The AP House Office asks all residents to purchase safe heaters such as warm air or ceramic heater. (The use of the following items is prohibited in AP House: kerosene heaters, carbon heaters, halogen heaters, electric coil-type heaters.)
  • Do not put objects that may ignite close to heaters. Putting heaters near beds and laundry is extremely dangerous, so please be extra cautious when using heaters other than air conditioners.

5. Bedding

Bedding lent to residents: Quilt, quilt cover, mattress, sheets, blanket, pillow, and pillow cover
Residents cannot bring any other bedding except for a summer cotton blanket.

Every month (excluding July/August/Sept.) Twice a month
July・August・September 3 times a month

Please check the bulletin board on each floor or near the entrance for the bed sheets exchange schedule.
Residents need to put used bedding (sheets, pillow covers, etc.) in a designated bag and put it in the corridor outside their room by 9:00 am. Residents will receive clean bedding by the evening on the same day.

6. Garbage

Residents can take out their garbage between 22:30 and 23:00. ※The 1st floor door on the north side of the building will remain unlocked during this time period.

  • Separate your garbage and put them into the plastic garbage bags designated by Beppu City. Residents can buy garbage bags at the Co-op or a grocery store. Please refer to the poster (PDF) you received when you moved in about how to separate garbage correctly.
  • Before residents dispose of their garbage, they need to have their garbage bag checked in the kitchen during Kitchen Duty.

    Garbage that is not separated correctly will not be collected. Residents that do not correctly separate their garbage will be asked to re-separate their garbage. Each resident is required to write their room number on their garbage bags.

  • Do not dispose of your personal garbage in the kitchen trash cans and do not leave your garbage bags in the hallway.
