My First Marathon in Kumamoto: A Day of Surprises and Joy

3 min read

The day after our homestay in Kumamoto was filled with anticipation and excitement as we prepared for the marathon. It was my first marathon ever. The experience was both challenging and rewarding. It made memorable by the diverse group of participants and the cultural activities that followed.

The Marathon: A Diverse Gathering

The marathon morning started with a cool breeze and clear skies, perfect for running. We started off with light exercises and stretching to prepare ourselves for the marathon. The starting line was a hub of excitement, with participants of all ages and background. The sense of community and inclusion was inspiring.

The Race: A Journey of Determination

As the marathon began, the sound of footsteps and encouraging cheers filled the air. The route took us through the scenic landscapes of rural Kumamoto, offering a visual treat that helped distract from the physical exertion. But to be honest, as I was not a runner myself; it was draining for me. Despite our best efforts, our university team finished last. Initially, this was a surprising and somewhat disappointing outcome. However, the support from fellow runners and spectators quickly turned our disappointment into a sense of achievement.

Post-Marathon Festivities: Attending Games

After the marathon, the festivities continued with a recreation activities. This local game, whose name I unfortunately do not recall, was a mix of strategy and physical activity, where we had to put stacks of small bags into a small basket on top of a pole. Playing this game with other participants added a layer of fun to the day. The laughter, friendly competition, and collective enjoyment made the experience even more memorable. We replayed the game three times as it was really fun and engaging.

A Heartwarming Japanese Lunch

Following the games, we were treated to a warm and comforting Japanese-style lunch. The meal, a porridge-like dish with potatoes, carrots, and chicken, was perfect for replenishing our energy after the marathon. The flavours were rich and satisfying, embodying the warmth and hospitality of Japanese cuisine. As we sat together, sharing the meal, we reflected on the day's events. We were also provided electrolyte and glucose drinks after the marathon.

A Day to Remember

Running my first marathon in Kumamoto was an unforgettable experience. It taught me the importance of perseverance, the joy of participation, and the beauty of community. The post-marathon activities, from the traditional game to the delicious lunch, added layers of enjoyment and connection that I will cherish forever. This experience highlighted the essence of homestay and participation: embracing new challenges, celebrating diversity, and connecting with people from different backgrounds.
