What comes to mind when you hear Bulgaria? For many, it’s probably yogurt. Among the many dishes that feature yogurt, I’d like to introduce the traditional dish moussaka.
Moussaka is made by sautéing potatoes, onions, and ground beef, baking them in the oven, and then layering a mixture of yogurt, flour, and eggs on top, finishing it off with a golden crust. This time, I had the opportunity to try making it together with Greti, an exchange student from Bulgaria.
“There’s a saying that if you can bake moussaka perfectly on your own, it means you’re ready to get married,” she explained. This was her first time making it by herself, and she had learned the recipe in advance from her mother so she could prepare it for me.
I could sense a bit of nervousness as we cooked. After about three hours of careful baking, it was finally ready. The moment she took a bite of the freshly baked dish, she proudly exclaimed, “Vkusno!” (Bulgarian for “delicious”).
Cooking and chatting together made for a truly enjoyable experience. Through this, we felt much closer to one another.
