Mental Well-Being: How to Improve Mental Health as a University Student

1 min read

University is an exciting chapter filled with opportunities to meet new people, dive into subjects you're passionate about, and experience independence. However, with all the excitement, it’s completely normal to encounter stress or anxiety. At APU, we are committed to supporting your mental well-being by highlighting resources like the Counseling Room to help you thrive both academically and personally.

1. Reflect on Yourself to Identify Issues

During my first semester at APU, I often felt overwhelmed by assignments and adjusting to a new environment. At times, I struggled to understand why I was feeling so stressed. Reflecting on my emotions became a game-changer. So, I started journaling daily to track my feelings and identify stress triggers. For instance, I noticed that rushing assignments at the last minute added unnecessary anxiety. By scheduling tasks earlier, I significantly reduced stress. If you’re struggling mentally, try writing down three emotions you felt today and one positive thing that happened. This small practice helps bring clarity to your thoughts and feelings.

Acknowledging your emotions, rather than avoiding them, provides insight into what you need to feel better and succeed.

2. Stay Connected

When I first joined APU, participating in Vietnamese Week helped me build meaningful connections. Being part of this event allowed me to celebrate my culture while creating friendships with students from diverse backgrounds. I collaborated with my peers to organize performances, plan logistics, and share Vietnamese traditions with the campus community. These shared experiences fostered a sense of belonging and reduced feelings of homesickness.

Engaging in campus activities is one of the best ways to stay socially connected and combat isolation. Why not join a student club, attend Multicultural Week events, or participate in campus festivals like the Tenku Festival? These activities not only broaden your horizons but also help you build a strong support system.

3. Look After Your Physical Health

Early on, I realized that my energy levels were directly tied to my physical well-being. Poor eating habits or lack of sleep made it harder to focus and stay motivated. To address this, I started meal prepping with friends to ensure I ate balanced meals during busy weeks. Additionally, I began using the APU Fitness Room and participated in outdoor hikes organized by student clubs.

Physical health is closely linked to emotional resilience. Taking care of the body is an essential step toward mental balance.

4. Be Kind to Yourself

During stressful periods, such as finals, I often placed unnecessary pressure on myself to achieve perfection. Over time, I learned the importance of self-compassion and setting realistic expectations. Create a simple self-care checklist that works for you. Include activities like taking a nature walk, enjoying a favorite hobby, or relaxing with a book or a comforting show.

Being kind to yourself helps build resilience and ensures you have the strength to face challenges.
