Finding Your Startup Support System at APU: Organizations to Launch Your Dream

3min read

Starting a business as a student can feel overwhelming, especially in a new country. But here’s the good news: you don’t have to do it alone.

When I first arrived at APU as a freshman, I had big dreams of launching a startup, but I had no idea where to begin. Fortunately, I discovered APU’s Startup Support program, which connected me with mentors, funding opportunities, and a community of like-minded entrepreneurs.

I uploaded my startup idea and applied for support on my own. It is not because someone told me to, but because I wanted to take the first step. Through this program, I met an incredible mentor who guided me throughout the process. With their support, I gained the confidence to join the Mito City × Young Global Leader Program, a competition that brings together young innovators. Our team proudly won first runner-up, which became one of my most memorable achievements so far.

If you're an international student or a Japanese student passionate about entrepreneurship, here are some key organizations in Oita that can help turn your ideas into reality.

Mito City × Young Global Leader Program

1. For International Students

Sparkle Oita – International Students Business Center

Sparkle Oita is a dedicated support hub for international students looking to start businesses in Japan.

Why I recommend it:
As an international student, navigating Japanese business regulations can be tricky. Sparkle Oita helped me understand visa requirements for startups and connected me with bilingual advisors.

What they offer:

  • Free business consultations (legal, visa, market entry)
  • Startup seminars and networking events
  • Mentorship from successful entrepreneurs
  • Coworking spaces

Start by attending an event to meet fellow entrepreneurs, and then apply for APU’s Startup Support Program or Project B, which is a university-supported program designed to help students turn their unique and outstanding project ideas into reality. Armed with fresh insights and collaborators, this is the ideal way to launch your ideas and make your mark!

My Final Thought

Right now, I’m continuing to develop my startup idea. It’s still in the early stages, but I’m focusing on building a prototype and expanding my network. Every small step is helping me move closer to my dream of launching a business that can make a real impact.

I used to think I had to figure everything out on my own. But the truth is, no matter if you’re an international student just starting out or a Japanese founder with big dreams, there’s a whole world of support waiting to help you succeed. Don’t go it alone—opportunity finds those who reach out!
