“I don’t have much hope when it comes to job hunting in Indonesia,” says Anggia, a student from the country. According to the Central Statistics Agency, Indonesia’s unemployment rate stood at 4.85% in August, ranking among the highest within the ten ASEAN member states.
The reasons are clear: rapid population growth, a high proportion of young people, and a job market that simply cannot keep pace with the number of job seekers. On top of that, employers often demand long-term practical experience, such as internships, and impose age restrictions, making the job search even more challenging.
Despite these hurdles, Anggia remains determined to become a teacher. To broaden her horizons, she enrolled at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU). On campus, she works as a Teaching Assistant, advising and coordinating students. Off campus, she volunteers in Beppu City, teaching English and sharing her culture with local elementary school children. Currently, she is focusing on language studies to pursue a teaching career in Japan.
In 2025, Southeast and South Asia have seen frequent protests led by frustrated youth, with many resulting in casualties. For students living abroad, the pressure to succeed is immense. Personally, having friends from various countries has made global issues feel much closer to home. I hope to continue supporting them as they strive toward their dreams and goals.

Based on a comprehensive cooperation agreement with Oita Godo Newspaper, since January 2022, Student PR Assistants (SPA) have been contributing their interviews with international students to the life and culture section of the newspaper’s morning edition. SPA will introduce different cultures and the interesting topics they raise from an authentic, student perspective. These student writers take this opportunity to get the newspaper’s readership and students interested in the world. They also aim to improve their skills with the aid of professional editors.
