As the spring holiday season approaches, many people are looking forward to making travel and leisure plans. Looking around the world, each country has its own unique ways of enjoying the holidays.
I spoke with my friend Mohi from Uzbekistan about how people in her home country spend this time of the year. In Uzbekistan, as in many other countries in the Islamic world, March 21 marks the New Year. It is called Navruz, a term of Persian origin.
During this period, people enjoy special New Year’s dishes, sports, and traditional dances. In addition, different regions host their own distinctive events and festivals.
Mohi recommended visiting Samarkand, the second-largest city after the capital, Tashkent. In spring, the weather becomes pleasantly warm, and the soft sunlight enhances the brilliance of the mosques’ blue tiles. She explained that during Navruz, people dress in colorful traditional costumes, gather together, and the entire city is wrapped in a beautiful and festive atmosphere.
At Registan Square, a symbol of the city, large crowds come together to celebrate the New Year, creating a lively and exciting scene.
While Japan has its own traditions and celebrations for the New Year, looking beyond our borders reveals a depth of culture far greater than we might imagine. Encountering unfamiliar traditions inspires a sense of excitement and curiosity about the world.

Based on a comprehensive cooperation agreement with Oita Godo Newspaper, since January 2022, Student PR Assistants (SPA) have been contributing their interviews with international students to the life and culture section of the newspaper’s morning edition. SPA will introduce different cultures and the interesting topics they raise from an authentic, student perspective. These student writers take this opportunity to get the newspaper’s readership and students interested in the world. They also aim to improve their skills with the aid of professional editors.
Hello everyone! I'm Sho Nishimura, a 3rd-year APM student! Recently, my favorite hobby has been traveling to various places and enjoying delicious food!
