Zimbabwe: Protecting Youth and Empowering Self-Awareness, “The World Through APU” (Oita Godo Newspaper)

Finding a Safe Space to Understand Oneself

When you hear the name “Zimbabwe,” many people may recognize it, but not know exactly where it is located. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to meet Tana, a student from Zimbabwe here at APU. I would like to introduce both the charm of her home country and the inspiring activities she has been leading.

The Republic of Zimbabwe is located in southern Africa, known for its breathtaking landscapes and diverse wildlife. Among its most iconic sights are the majestic baobab trees. Some of these trees are said to have lived for over 5,000 years and even seeing them in photographs can be awe-inspiring. I highly encourage you to look them up.

Although Zimbabwe is full of natural beauty, it also faces serious social challenges. Issues such as teenage pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, and child marriage remain significant concerns. To protect young people from these challenges, Tana has been actively involved in a variety of initiatives.

She has used writing as a “voice” to address these issues, creating works such as a novel about domestic violence and a short story about an abandoned child finding love. In 2023, she also launched a self-care brand focused on health and well-being. Her products, such as hand creams and perfumes made from natural, low-irritation ingredients, are offered at affordable prices.

Her guiding philosophy is to “create a society where everyone can safely and confidently face their own bodies.” Motivated by a desire to learn alongside people from different backgrounds, she enrolled at APU. Now, from Beppu, she is striving to make a positive impact on the world.
Every time I encounter international students like her, I am deeply impressed by their passion and initiative. It has strengthened my desire to continue sharing their stories, as well as the unique appeal of their countries and cultures.

Based on a comprehensive cooperation agreement with Oita Godo Newspaper, since January 2022, Student PR Assistants (SPA) have been contributing their interviews with international students to the life and culture section of the newspaper’s morning edition. SPA will introduce different cultures and the interesting topics they raise from an authentic, student perspective. These student writers take this opportunity to get the newspaper’s readership and students interested in the world. They also aim to improve their skills with the aid of professional editors.

I want to write articles that will help APU students love their university even more! Additionally, I aim to share the greatness of APU that only current students understand with middle and high school students interested in APU!
