Improving the environment in Bangladesh

Legame’s leather products are made in Bangladesh. For religious reasons, beef consumption is very high in Bangladesh and the leftover cowhides are simply discarded, leading to river and air pollution. This project was launched to create products using these cowhides, developing sales channels in order to increase the use of hides and help improve the environment.

In September, project members traveled to Bangladesh and visited the factory that makes the leather products. They observed the process in which items are carefully made by hand and saw the huge volume of cowhides that were being discarded before the project began. Project members renewed their belief that they could help improve the environment by selling these products.

What can we do for society?

Legame began with the desire to create social good and inspire others to take interest in doing the same. Project members are always talking with each other about what they can do to give back to society.

Even after Legame was chosen as a Selected Project in June, members held many meetings and decided to launch two projects: using the sales of the leather goods to fund tree planting and educational support in Bangladesh.

The reason behind planting trees was Bangladesh’s low rate (13%) of forest coverage. Legame’s members decided to plant the same number of trees as Legame products sold, taking action to improve the environment. Legame project members believe that the continued contributions of these small actions may bring great change to the environment.

As for education support, Bangladesh currently has factories from companies around the world but still has a low literacy rate. The project’s members therefore decided to send a book to Bangladesh for every leather product sold.

Future activities

The concept driving the Legame project is to give shape to people’s hopes, and create social good in addition to selling leather products. Project members continue to learn about social entrepreneurship through these activities. We hope you will take a look at the products and give your support!
