“=” (Equal) is a student organization established with the aim of creating a society capable of respecting individuals without slotting them into separate “masculine” or “feminine” categories. As the initial step in its activities, the organization is presently endeavoring to spread the concept “Feminism is for everybody” throughout the APU campus.
In order to gain an understanding of the current situation on campus, Equal administered a questionnaire regarding gender awareness to current students, faculty and staff members, and alumni between July and August 2020. During that time, 153 responses were submitted. An example of a question on the questionnaire is: “Has your home country achieved gender equality?” Seventy-six percent of respondents answered “Somewhat disagree” or “Disagree.” This clearly demonstrates that inequality remains in the countries/regions of origin of APU students today, and this shapes their background.
