Drinking Alcohol

In Japan, drinking under the age of 20 is against the law. If you're 20 or older and choose to drink, please do so responsibly and keep the following in mind:

  • Never engage in or encourage “chugging” (downing a drink in one go). It’s extremely dangerous and can be life-threatening.
  • Some people can’t drink or simply don’t want to - don’t pressure anyone to drink!
  • Avoid drinking when you're on an empty stomach, feeling unwell, or taking medication like cold medicine or painkillers.

Smoking Tobacco

Smoking is also illegal in Japan for anyone under 20. If you're 20 or older and want to smoke on campus, you can only do so in one of the two designated smoking areas. Smoking anywhere else on campus is strictly prohibited, with no exceptions.
