1. APU's policy on Student Life
1. Importance of Multicultural Coexistence and Respect for Human Rights at APU
APU was founded on the principles of "freedom, peace, humanity, international mutual understanding, and the future shape of the Asia-Pacific region." These ideals have drawn students, faculty, and staff from over 100 countries and regions, each bringing diverse nationalities, ethnicities, religions, and cultural backgrounds. Gathered in mutual understanding of APU’s foundational principles, the community actively engages in their education, research, and contributing to society, with the goal of becoming individuals who will carry forward these principles in the future.
To truly embody this mission, every member of the APU community is expected to act with a strong ethical awareness rooted in respect for human dignity and rights. This means:
- Acknowledging and valuing each other’s existence
- Deeply understanding and actively practicing the principle that all humans are equal
- Rejecting hatred and refusing to become either perpetrators or victims of harm
These values must be actively practiced and shared broadly throughout society.
2. Recognizing your Role as a Member of the Beppu and Oita Community
APU was established in April 2000 with the cooperation of Oita Prefecture and Beppu, which generously provided land for the campus, as well as approximately 20 billion yen in construction grants. In addition, scholarships from local governments, companies, foundations, individuals, Oita Prefecture, Beppu, and the Ritsumeikan Trust reflect the goodwill and high expectations everyone has for APU’s growth and the success of its students.
As members of the local community, all APU students are expected to contribute to the growth and development of Oita Prefecture and Beppu. Regardless of your country or region of origin, once you join APU, you become part of our community. We encourage you to take the time to learn about the history and culture of Beppu, and to carry yourself each day in a manner that reflects the values and responsibilities of an APU student living alongside local residents.
3. Religion
APU is home to students from many countries around the world, each bringing with them diverse religious beliefs and cultural values. Religion can influence not only cultural practices and customs, but also an individual’s daily life, ideology, lifestyle, and even philosophies on life. The degree of religious observance also varies from person to person. As a place where students with diverse religious views gather, to treat all students in a fair and equitable manner, APU has established the following three fundamental regulations regarding religion:
- APU will ensure an individual’s religious freedom.
- In principle, APU will not give assistance to religious undertakings.
-
The following religious activities are prohibited within common areas of APU:
- ・Proselytizing for any specific religion or carrying out activities that may support or promote that religion and receiving assistance from the same religious group.
- ・Activities that could constitute oppression, interference, insulting of other religions, etc., antisocial activities, or activities that would make it difficult to lead student’s life
4. Illegal or Disruptive Conduct
Most APU students have a sufficient understanding of our university’s vision and background, choosing to actively engage in their studies, extracurricular activities, and community involvement, leading fulfilling student lives. Unfortunately, however, it is also a reality that some students have caused problems in the local community through disruptive or criminal behavior.
Acts such as traffic violations and noise disturbances are not just personal issues; they affect the reputation of all APU students and the university as a whole. Such behavior damages the trust and goodwill that the community places in APU.
Your student life would not be possible without the trust of Beppu residents. Please act responsibly and with consideration for the community around you.
