6. Usage of drugs
The use of marijuana and other substances that are illegal in Japan is a serious offense that can severely disrupt your student life due to its criminal nature and potential to be addictive. At APU, students come from a wide range of countries, and some may come from places where such substances are not illegal. Misunderstandings, such as believing that smoking marijuana is less harmful than smoking tobacco, that personal use is not punishable, or that it’s not a serious issue in Japan, can lead to dangerous choices. It is essential to understand that in Japan, these substances are considered highly harmful and are strictly punished under the law. Students must remain aware and avoid engaging with illegal drugs out of simple curiosity or careless impulse.
Legal Penalties for Marijuana Use, Possession, and Cultivation
| Possession for personal use | Up to 7 years imprisonment |
|---|---|
| Possession for commercial purposes | 1 to 10 years imprisonment and a fine up to 3,000,000 yen |
| Cultivation | 1 to 10 years imprisonment |
| Use | Up to 7 years imprisonment |

Awareness and Survey on Drug Issues
At APU, we are committed to supporting a healthy and fulfilling campus life for our diverse student body. We also recognize the university’s broader responsibility to contribute to a safe and secure society through education. As part of our ongoing efforts to raise awareness of drug-related issues, APU conducts a survey on drug use during the student health check-up period. We kindly ask for your cooperation in completing this survey once a year as part of a university-wide awareness initiative on drug-related issues.
Drug Overdose
Even legally prescribed medications can lead to an overdose, causing serious, life-threatening health issues if taken in excessive amounts. Overdose can lead to loss of consciousness, difficulty breathing, cardiac arrest, and in severe cases where emergency care is delayed, death. Furthermore, drug misuse can also negatively impact your academics, relationships, and even seriously damage your future career and ability to function in society. Regardless of curiosity or stress, never experiment with drugs. Protect your health and future by staying informed and avoiding getting caught up in dangerous acts.
