Medical Insurance System

The Individual Number (My Number)
“My Number (Individual Number)” is a social security and tax identification number assigned to all residents of Japan. You may be asked to present this number at a bank when receiving or sending money overseas, or when applying for a part-time job. International students will complete this registration during the orientation period. About two months after registering your address, a “Notification of Individual Number” will be sent to you by post.
By using this multi-purpose card, you can integrate your National Health Insurance Eligibility Card with your My Number Card, allowing you to carry just one card. If you choose to integrate the Eligibility Card with the My Number Card, no Eligibility Card will be issued after August 1 of the following year (as it will no longer be necessary).
Applying for a My Number Card is simple—just submit the “Application Form for the Individual Number Card,” which is enclosed with the Notification of Individual Number, using the return envelope provided. We strongly recommend that you apply. For details on how to apply online, click here.

Be Prepared to Pay in Cash
At most clinics, only cash (Japanese yen) is accepted. When visiting a clinic, please be sure to bring sufficient cash (at least 5,000 yen). In addition, patients with a fever may not be allowed inside the building, and temperature checks or medical examinations may be conducted outdoors. In such cases, payment can only be made in cash.
Confirm in Advance for Specific Requirements
If you prefer a medical professional of the same gender due to religious or cultural reasons, confirm with the medical institution in advance. Such requests may not be accommodated without prior arrangements.
