In Japan, all residents between the ages of 20 and 59 are required to enroll in the public pension system and pay premiums, regardless of nationality.
When you turn 20, the Japan Pension Service will send you an orange envelope titled “Notice of National Pension Enrollment” during the month before your birthday. This notice contains explanations about the pension system and how to pay the premiums.
For domestic students who are not registered as residents of Beppu City, the notice will be sent to the address listed on your resident record (jūminhyō).

For students who have difficulty paying the premiums, there is a system called the Special Payment System for Students (gakusei nōfu tokurei seido), which allows you to defer payments.
If your premium payments or exemption status are not approved, you may not be able to receive Disability Basic Pension (shōgai nenkin) in the event of illness or injury.
