Traditional Indian Cuisine “A Window to the World from APU”

A Taste of Togetherness

Shrey, a 20-year-old student in his second year in the College of International Management, is from Hyderabad in Southern India. He's one of about 100 students from India at APU, and he is a popular guy. We asked him to talk about his favorite dish: Hyderabadi Mandi.

Mandi is a dish of seasoned rice topped with fried onions and raisins that is served with chicken. It’s often eaten with a side of sauce or mayonnaise. The dish originated in Yemen in the Middle East and has been loved for a long time, with regional variations in flavor.

For Shrey, this traditional dish reminds him of spending time with friends and family. Everyone gathers around a single large platter, chatting and catching up on each other's lives. This practice naturally brings people closer and helps them open up. He calls it a "precious time for laughter" in his daily life. Since it’s also very filling, Mandi is a popular meal during Ramadan (the Islamic month of fasting).

"If you come to India, I hope you try it and have a relaxing time," he says. Just as language changes when you cross the ocean, he's found it interesting to experience a culture so different as Japan's.

Shrey enjoying the dish. Gathering with friends to eat from a large platter of Mandi naturally brings a smile to everyone's faces.

Based on a comprehensive cooperation agreement with Oita Godo Newspaper, since January 2022, Student PR Assistants (SPA) have been contributing their interviews with international students to the life and culture section of the newspaper’s morning edition. SPA will introduce different cultures and the interesting topics they raise from an authentic, student perspective. These student writers take this opportunity to get the newspaper’s readership and students interested in the world. They also aim to improve their skills with the aid of professional editors.
