Singapore: National Day - A Window to the World from APU, Oita Godo Newspaper

Celebrating Together, Reaffirming Unity

Around the world, countries observe a wide variety of national holidays. While many are linked to religious traditions, others commemorate the founding of a nation or its independence from colonial rule.

For people in Japan, the concept of an Independence Day may not be particularly familiar. In many countries, however, it is one of the most important national celebrations of the year. Singapore is one such example. Every year on August 9, the nation marks its National Day, with festivities taking place across the country.

My Singaporean friend, Marcus Tan Jia Sheng, shared some insights into how the day is celebrated. National Day commemorates Singapore's independence from Malaysia on August 9, 1965. One of the highlights is the large-scale National Day Parade, while fireworks illuminate the downtown skyline. Ceremonies are also held throughout the country, and many people join the celebrations wearing red and white clothing or accessories, reflecting the colors of Singapore's national flag.

Singapore is a multicultural nation where people of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds coexist as Singaporeans. Although different communities observe different traditions and religious practices, August 9 is a day when all citizens come together as one people to celebrate their shared national identity and reaffirm their sense of unity. In this way, National Day serves an important role beyond the festivities themselves.
Singapore faced numerous challenges on its road to independence, yet it has continued to prosper and develop over the decades. The strong bonds that connect its people across ethnic and cultural lines may well be one of the factors behind the nation's remarkable success

Based on a comprehensive cooperation agreement with Oita Godo Newspaper, since January 2022, Student PR Assistants (SPA) have been contributing their interviews with international students to the life and culture section of the newspaper’s morning edition. SPA will introduce different cultures and the interesting topics they raise from an authentic, student perspective. These student writers take this opportunity to get the newspaper’s readership and students interested in the world. They also aim to improve their skills with the aid of professional editors.
