Every year during the spring (May-July) and fall semesters (November-January), APU hosts a series of Multicultural Weeks. During each week the spotlight is put on one of the many countries and regions represented on campus and that country’s culture and language are introduced and celebrated through a range of student-led events and activities.
Between 100 and 150 students take a central role and work together to create each of the Multicultural Weeks. A feature of these Weeks is the fact that approximately a third of Week participants are not native to the Week’s featured country or region. These non-native students work under the guidance of native students to become expert ambassadors for their culture. Through this event students learn how to develop a greater sense of pride in their native culture and a greater respect for others, while also acquiring the kinds of skills sought in global human resources including mutual understanding and decision making skills, initiative and the ability to work well as part of a diverse team.
From June 17 until June 21, 2013, the Vietnamese Week was held at APU. During the week students organized a range of events including a parade-style reenactment of a traditional Vietnamese wedding, a free Vietnamese hairstyle and beauty clinic, and a beauty contest featuring students of 10 different nationalities dressed in Ao Dai. Vietnamese food was available at the Cafeteria including Buntan (Vietnamese style noodles) and Vietnamese style spring rolls. You could also try on an Ao Dai at a booth set up in the Cafeteria. The Week was a great time to experience Vietnamese culture and culminated in Friday’s Grand Show featuring traditional dancing, music and other performances which enthralled the audience.

2013 marks the 10th anniversary of Vietnamese Week at APU. Therefore we aim to make it a special event that brings together the achievements of the previous ten years with a young, dynamic power and the hopes and dreams for the future.
Preparation has been underway since last year October and involved over 300 students from many different countries and regions. Each day of Vietnamese Week 2013 will be characterized with a specific theme and distinctive events. For example, Monday is “Opening Day” with the colorful Opening Parade featuring a Vietnamese style wedding.
Tuesday is “Beauty Day” with a Vietnamese style beauty salon and Prom Night and “Miss Ao Dai” Contest – so be sure to put your best dress on! Wednesday, “Sports Day”, is a chance to stretch your muscles with a soccer tournament and a Vietnamese Culture Race (a scavenger hunt-style race). This year the Grand Show takes you back to ancient Vietnam with a heart-touching story and many first-time-ever performances including a Vietnamese Dragon Dance. From Monday to Friday you can also try some Vietnamese cuisine at the Cafeteria, take a photo in Vietnamese traditional dress at our booth or buy one of our T-shirts and donate to a charity fund.
