Every year during the spring (May-July) and fall semesters (November-January), APU hosts a series of Multicultural Weeks. During each week the spotlight is put on one of the many countries and regions represented on campus and that country’s culture and language are introduced and celebrated through a range of student-led events and activities.
Between 100 and 150 students take a central role and work together to create each of the Multicultural Weeks. A feature of these Weeks is the fact that approximately a third of Week participants are not native to the Week’s featured country or region. These non-native students work under the guidance of native students to become expert ambassadors for their culture. Through this event students learn how to develop a greater sense of pride in their native culture and a greater respect for others, while also acquiring the kinds of skills sought in global human resources including mutual understanding and decision making skills, initiative and the ability to work well as part of a diverse team.
During the week of July 1-5, 2013, Korean Week was held at APU. During the week a range of Korean dishes was available on the Cafeteria menu in addition to Korean Bibim noodles, Ddeokggochi (skewered rice cakes), and other Korean specialties on sale at the “Tourism & Bazaar” food and information stall. The Korean Week Grand Show was a great success and, following the theme of Korean pottery and legends, featured a fashion show of traditional Korean costumes, a Taekwondo display and much more. A feature of this year’s Korean Week was the inaugural Korean culture and exchange event held in Beppu City for local citizens to enjoy Korean foods and cultural performances.
Footage of the Grand Show was recorded and streamed live on the internet via Ustream. Please be sure to tune in and enjoy the colorful performances by APU’s multilingual and multicultural students.
Korean week has always been the chance for us Korean students at APU to come together, showcase our culture and strengthen our relationship with the international APU family. In keeping with tradition, this year’s Korean Week, themed “Beauty of Korea”, will present to you the traditional and modern blend that is Korea.
Come and join us at the Cafeteria from Monday to Thursday and create your very own traditional Korean pendant and mask, and enjoy a display of Hanbok traditional Korean costumes.
If you like K-pop, then don’t miss our live dance performances on Monday and Tuesday. On Thursday and Friday we will open a booth in front of the fountain and sell a range of Korean local specialties including tea and noodles and other goodies. You can also take part in traditional Korean pastimes and games.
Our preparations are right on track, and we are confident that our Friday Grand Show and other events will have you in awe again this year!
So come and join us for this year’s Korean Week.
We hope you will enjoy it as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you!
