Every year during the spring (May-July) and fall semesters (November-January), APU hosts a series of Multicultural Weeks. During each week the spotlight is put on one of the many countries and regions represented on campus and that country’s culture and language are introduced and celebrated through a range of student-led events and activities.
Between 100 and 150 students take a central role and work together to create each of the Multicultural Weeks. A feature of these Weeks is the fact that approximately a third of Week participants are not native to the Week’s featured country or region. These non-native students work under the guidance of native students to become expert ambassadors for their culture. Through this event students learn how to develop a greater sense of pride in their native culture and a greater respect for others, while also acquiring the kinds of skills sought in global human resources including mutual understanding and decision making skills, initiative and the ability to work well as part of a diverse team.
During the week of July 8-12, 2013, Thai Week was held at APU. The rainy season in Kyushu officially ended on July 8th, coinciding perfectly with the start of Thai Week. Under a perfect blue sky, Thai Week kicked off with a dazzling opening parade involving over 30 students dressed in traditional Thai costumes. The highlight of day 4 was the reenactment of the Songkran Festival, the famous traditional Thai New Year’s water festival during which participants splashed each other with water – the perfect way to refresh both the heart and body on a hot summer’s day. The finale event – the Grand Show – was held on Friday evening and showcased Thai culture through a range of traditional music and costume performances. A super-spicy Thai food eating contest and Thai sweets tasting corner were also held in addition to a booth for students to try on a Traditional Thai costume. With decorations and displays dotted around the campus, people could get a real taste of Thai culture throughout the week.
Footage of the Grand Show was recorded and streamed live on the internet via Ustream. Please be sure to tune in and enjoy the colorful performances by APU’s multilingual and multicultural students.
From Monday July 8 to Friday July 12, 2013, APU will be welcomed into the enticing atmosphere of warm and exotic Thailand. With the preparation underway since the fall semester, Thai Week 2013 promises to be much livelier than previous years. We will start the week with a gorgeous Thai parade at the fountain showing off various kinds of Thai traditional clothes. You are invited to try on the magnificent Thai traditional clothes at our booth set up at cafeteria throughout the week. Be sure to come along to the cafeteria and sample some of our delish Thai sweets. You can also enjoy the delicate taste of Thai traditional foods on the Cafeteria “Ethnic Foods” menu, including Pad-Thai, Chicken Massamun Curry, Chicken Kra-Pow, and many more! On Tuesday, we challenge you to join our HOT spicy eating contest to see who can endure the heat of the famous Thai chili.
One of the most anticipated events will be the very first Songkran Festival (traditional Thai New Year water festival) on Thursday during which you can experience the refreshing and exciting splash of water in the heat of the APU summer. The highlight event of Thai Week — and one that you would not want to miss! — will be the fascinating love story performed at the Grand Show. So save this date in your diary and make sure to come along!
