APU students at Aichi World Exposition Part 1

Aug 12, 2005

"Working towards the eradication of child prostitution in the Asia Pacific region."

This summer, two APU student groups grappling with the problems our world faces, will be taking their messages to the people of world at the "Aichi World Exposition".

On Friday August 19th, Sun Piccolo Project members will take part in the forum "If you knew the truth, would you still be an accomplice to child prostitution?" at the Aichi World Exhibition Civic Pavilion. Spotlight spoke with HARAGUCHI Emi (APM 2nd year), member of the Sun Piccolo Project, a group with an aim to eradicating child prostitution."The Sun Piccolo Project" encompasses the ideal that "children should always be able to shine like the sun". With this ideal in mind, our group plays an active part in working towards the eradication of child prostitution in the Asia Pacific region.

Child prostitution is a problem that cannot be solved without the international support of government and citizen groups acting to create laws and protect victims. We believe that this is a problem that should also be tackled by the Japanese, some of whom are perpetrators in the matter. What we can do as students, is to take part in lectures and events to help get the problem known by as many people as possible.

We will appeal to the people of the world on August 19th at the Civic Pavilion at the Aichi World Exhibition. Events on the day will be made up of three parts: live forums with invited guests, a student musical and presentation of a short film based on the results of field work. Invited guests Mr. YAMAMOTO Toshiharu from the NPO "Earth the Spaceship", and Mr. SAITO Chihiro, Supervisor of the NGO "Shapla Neer – Citizens Committee in Japan for Overseas Support" and Dean of Correspondence Education, Nihon Fukushi University, will participate in the forum, which will begin at 2:30pm.

Recently, I actually went to Thailand to undertake on-the-spot research in preparation for this event. Until now, I had thought that international cooperation was all about giving assistance; however, by actually talking with some of the women over there, I realized that it is more about coming together to discuss the issues to try to come up with solutions together. Perhaps communicating and sharing of knowledge of the problem is the first step in international cooperation.
