Russian Climate and Cuisine “A Window to the World from APU”

2min read

A place known for its freezing climate, and borscht, a dish that warms the body

Grisha, who transferred to APU in April this year, learned about Japan through a toy souvenir from his father. When he was a high school student, he became interested in Japanese culture after watching Yasujiro Ozu's film "Tokyo Story" and first came to Japan during that time. We had a chance to talk to him about Russian culture.

In comparison to Japan, Russian cuisine tends to be less seasoned and features more potatoes, dairy, and meat dishes rather than seafood. Notably, soups and stews like borscht and beef stroganoff, which warm the body, are famous. Sour cream is often added when eating both. Their staple food, bread, is hard and crispy, resembling French bread.

Signature dish: Russian Borscht, Bread, and Beef Tongue

Experiencing temperatures below freezing in winter is quite common, and people can skate on frozen lakes. In the extreme cold of Siberia, cars can even drive on the lakes' surfaces. Since the ice may crack if it's thin, it's safer to drive with at least two vehicles in tandem. Grisha mentioned that driving on ice was not much different from driving on normal roads, although it was a little bumpy with snow on the ground.
Someday, I'd also like to drive on the frozen lakes of Siberia.

Siberia experiences extreme cold where sub-zero temperatures in winter are quite ordinary.
