On Wednesday, July 9, 2025, over 20 faculty members gathered for a dynamic faculty development workshop led by Professor Brent Ritchie of The University of Queensland, hosted by the School of Management. Focused on the impact of research publications, the session reflected the university’s broader commitment to fostering research excellence, collaborative learning, and a strong research culture by equipping faculty with practical tools and renewed motivation for meaningful scholarly work.

Professor Ritchie, an internationally recognized expert in tourism risk management and academic publishing, drew on his extensive experience leading research projects and editorial roles with major academic journals. He offered concrete strategies for planning research that achieves both scholarly value and societal relevance, addressing critical questions such as how to gather and present evidence of research impact, how to navigate and learn from journal rejection, and how to identify valuable intersections between research, teaching, and external engagement to amplify real-world impact.

A standout feature of the workshop was its interactive approach. Alongside Professor Ritchie’s guidance, guest speakers Associate Professor SAITO Hiroaki (College of International Management) and Associate Professor RICO LUGO Sinndy Dayana (College of International Management) gave first-hand accounts of their own publishing journeys, highlighting both obstacles and effective research planning methods. Their contributions sparked lively discussion and allowed participants to explore best practices for aligning research questions with journal requirements and maximizing contributions to theory and methodology.

The highly participatory format—mixing presentations, Q&A, and panel dialogue—allowed attendees to share personal experiences and lessons learned, reinforcing a sense of community and peer support. The event was intentionally open to all faculty, aiming to reduce disciplinary silos and promote a university-wide culture of research rigor and ambition. The combination of practical publishing advice and candid discussion about the realities of academic research made the workshop both relevant and inspiring for early-career and established faculty alike.
