In addition to Japanese and English, which are required subjects, students at APU can study six languages through elective subjects: Chinese, Korean, Malay-Indonesian, Spanish, Thai, and Vietnamese. These languages are called Asia Pacific Languages (AP languages). AP languages are offered in subjects from level I (introductory) to level IV (pre-advanced). Students who have completed a level II or higher AP language subject become eligible to register for Global Language Learning subjects. Students also have the opportunity to acquire advanced language proficiency in AP languages by actively communicating with the international students, faculty, and staff at APU who are native speakers of these languages.
*To register for AP language subjects, Japanese-basis students must have completed “Elementary English A and B,” and English-basis students must have completed “Japanese Foundation I, II, and III,” or have been exempted.
The Global Language Learning subjects in AP languages are for students who have completed an AP language level II or higher subject. These subjects utilize APU’s multicultural environment to provide language learning that is more practically oriented. Global Language Learning classes take maximal advantage of APU’s multicultural and multinational environment to facilitate authentic and active language learning. They also offer autonomous learning support to all registered students.

Language immersion programs are intensive programs designed to improve student language proficiency during the summer and winter breaks. In addition to on-campus study, they include study at overseas universities or their affiliated language schools. In these programs, students receive the opportunity to deepen their understanding of a language, culture, and society of the Asia Pacific region by immersing themselves fully into a foreign culture.
