Because we live in an ever more connected and globalized world it can feel like we are surrounded by news of lawless terrorist acts steeped in extremist beliefs, expressions of disregard for international goodwill, or other dangers that seem unprecedented in human history. In times like this, our actions must be rooted in a mutual respect for the humanity and existence of each person. In any type of conflict or confrontation, the path to resolution begins with reaching an understanding through dialogue. Resorting to violence never amounts to anything. It is a universal truth of humankind that reason triumphs in the end.

Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University was founded on the ideals of Freedom, Peace, and Humanity, International Mutual Understanding, and the Future Shape of the Asia Pacific Region. As you venture out into this sometimes chaotic world, keep these APU ideals close to your heart. Be proud that you are a student of a university founded on a respect for humanity. Be confident that you and your studies are part of a search for a greater truth.
