On Wednesday, July 6, Mr. CHIYODA Kunio, the head of the Certified Public Accountants and Auditing Oversight Board until this past March, gave a social outreach seminar entitled “The Role of Corporate Accountants in the Global Era”. The Certified Public Accountants and Auditing Oversight Board is the government agency in charge of assuring the quality of Japan’s certified public accountants and auditing systems.

In his lecture, Mr. CHIYODA discussed the importance of understanding the fundamental principles of accounting because they underpin global commerce, and he explained why Japan needs to internationalize its accounting standards. He also talked about why both companies and international organizations need people who understand accounting and introduced some of the fields in which accountants are having success in the global arena.

About 100 students attended the seminar. They took notes and listened intently as Mr. CHIYODA afforded them a chance to look at accounting from a different angle than they would normally in the classroom. After the lecture, Mr. CHIYODA fielded students’ questions about the certified public accounting system and how they should approach their accounting studies.

APU has been inviting business owners and other professionals active in the real world to give social outreach seminars since 2010.
