Going to university in a new place or a new country is a mix of excitement and anticipation that can make new students feel a bit nervous. No one understands those feelings more than other students who have gone on the same journey.
FLAG (Fellow Advisory Group) is here to welcome new students to the APU community. As a peer support group made up of APU students, FLAG helps those adjusting to life on campus and in Beppu.
To guide those arriving in April, 28 students have been selected as FLAG members. They will support new students with orientation events, giving guidance about student life and APU’s academic system. FLAG members will introduce the world of APU, making everything easy to understand. FLAG will also host welcome events for new students, as well as provide information about student life on campus and in Beppu City.
On February 28 and March 1, FLAG held an overnight training retreat. At the outset, members dedicated themselves to FLAG’s mission: welcome and support new students. Throughout the retreat, members participated in trust building and team management exercises, preparing them to help new students.
For the month of April, new students can meet with FLAG members at any time to receive support for their new life in Beppu. All new students need to do is find a FLAG member wearing the red jacket that says “Just ask me!”
In addition to FLAG, APU provides new students with numerous channels of support as they become members of the APU community. RA’s (Resident Assistants) welcome new students residing in AP House, and TA’s (Teaching Assistants) help students understand APU’s academic system. At the Learning Commons in the APU Library, Academic & Learning Core Staff (ALRCS) support student study. Student Exchange Advisors (SEA’s) assist students preparing for study abroad, and Pair Advisors (PA’s) support English and Japanese language study. Each of these groups is preparing to welcome new students in the coming spring semester with new programs and initiatives. APU strives to make the transition into student life as easy as possible.
FLAG’s Mission:
We believe that contributing to APU is connected to contributing to the world. As global citizens, let us welcome the new students as friends of APU who can join us in contributing to the world. In order for these students to get a smooth start to their life at APU, we aim to accept and support them as only experienced senior students can.
