On Friday, 5 April, 2024, Ms. Sachiko Nakajima, one of the Thematic Project Producers for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan (hereafter, referred to as “the Expo”), visited Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) and interacted with students.
The Expo aims to serve as a testing ground to show the world hope for a future society through creation born from the intersection of diverse values under the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.” Eight prominent figures from various fields in Japan are acting as Thematic Project Producers to showcase eight “Signature Pavilions” exploring the theme of “life.” Among them, Ms. Nakajima is overseeing the “Invigorating Lives” theme. Her project, “Playground of Life: Jellyfish Pavilion,” strongly incorporates educational elements. The concept of the Jellyfish Pavilion, which is sponsored by the Ritsumeikan Trust, focuses on diversity and inclusion. This aligns closely with APU's goals, leading to the decision for this visit.
Ms. Nakajima, who is a professional jazz pianist, and her band member, Korean percussionist and changgo (Korean drum) player Mr. Choi Jae Chol, toured the campus, which was filled with a welcoming atmosphere for new students. Additionally, she interacted with students from multicultural extracurricular groups related to traditional culture and performing arts from around the world, including places like Thailand and Oceania. These groups are characteristic of APU. She spent many joyful moments engaging in communication with the students through music and various languages. The visit concluded with a commemorative photo taken with the Jellyfish Pavilion members striking a jellyfish pose.
Ms. Nakajima is planning to visit APU again during the university’s Oceania Week in July 2024, and is planning to have a discussion involving APU students in relation to the Expo.
