On Monday, July 15, 2024, a Regional Exchange class was held at the APU campus, bringing together volunteers from the Beppu community and primarily international students from APU. This exchange class, which aims to provide a space for practical Japanese language use and promote mutual intercultural understanding, has been held continuously since APU's opening in 2000. Over the years, approximately 700 local residents have participated in the program. Although the classes were paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this event marked the first in-person gathering in three years.
The exchange class took place as part of a Japanese language course and was attended by around 50 regional volunteers and 43 international students from APU. The class activities were based on plans prepared in advance by the international students, who conducted conversations in Japanese. The activities included introducing their home countries' cultures and cuisines, hosting quizzes to guess their home regions, and demonstrating traditional dances. Given that many students also work part-time in Beppu, there was a lively Q&A session on the topic of "Student Life and Part-Time Work," among other creative exchanges.
After the class, a campus tour was led by students, marking the conclusion of the Spring Semester exchange program. The regional volunteers expressed their appreciation, with comments such as, "It was enjoyable, and I had wondered when this would restart after the pandemic." Students also shared positive feedback: "I gained confidence by practicing the Japanese I learned in class," "I learned about the interests and experiences of the local community members," and "I was nervous as I rarely get to talk with elderly Japanese people, but it was a lot of fun."
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the volunteers who participated. APU will continue to provide opportunities for interaction between our students and the local community. Additionally, the APU campus cafeteria is open to the public, and we warmly welcome everyone to visit at any time.
