On Saturday, November 16, Oita Space Hike 2024 - Uchuken Oita (organized by the Oita Prefecture Advanced Technology Challenge Division, supported by the Oita Prefectural Board of Education, and operated by Oita Asahi Broadcasting Co., Ltd.) was held at APU. This event provided elementary, junior high, and high school students from Oita Prefecture with the opportunity to engage with space exploration, science, and advanced technologies. Thirteen students from across the prefecture participated, enhancing their understanding of space technology and fostering a deeper interest in innovation.
The highlight of the event was a special lecture delivered by Professor Shinichi Nakasuka from the Graduate School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo. Professor Nakasuka shared valuable insights into his work on space probes and small satellite launch missions. Using real-world examples, he explained the technologies, challenges, and broader significance of cutting-edge efforts in space exploration. The young participants listened with keen interest, their eyes sparkling with curiosity and inspiration.
Following the lecture, participants attended a session focused on the principles of rocket propulsion systems, which included both theoretical instruction and practical experimentation. Divided into seven teams, the students conducted experiments using miniature racing cars to simulate rocket propulsion mechanisms. Within the constraints of limited resources and time, each team engaged in iterative testing and creative problem-solving, refining their designs through trial and error. This hands-on activity allowed the students to cultivate scientific thinking and collaborative skills.
The event culminated in a team-based contest where participants presented their innovative solutions and the outcomes of their experiments. Professor Nakasuka provided constructive feedback and recognized outstanding achievements with awards. The participants’ faces were filled with the satisfaction and pride in their accomplishments.
This event served as an invaluable opportunity for the next generation of scientists and engineers to experience state-of-the-art advancements in space technology. APU remains steadfast in its commitment to working alongside the local community and supporting initiatives that contribute to shaping the region’s future.
