On Friday, June 6, 2025, a team from APU earned Second Runner-Up at the prestigious HSBC/HKU Asia Pacific Business Case Competition in Hong Kong. Entry into this international competition requires teams to either win their regional rounds or receive a direct invitation from the organizers. APU secured their spot by emerging victorious at the Japan regional competition, held at Waseda University, earning them the opportunity to represent Japan on the international stage.

The team advanced through the regional preliminary rounds and reached the international finals thanks to several key factors. Their strategy to maintain a clear division of roles enhanced their efficiency under pressure, and they engaged in rigorous internal logic-checking by constantly questioning each other’s ideas. This approach led them to realistic solutions that were supported by strong analytical backing of financial and risk considerations. Additionally, the team actively participated in events organized by the competition, notably winning Best Dressed award on the first night of the international competition by wearing yukata, which established their presence and helped secure their spot in the finals.

The team was mentored by Assistant Professor PHAM Tam Long from the College of International Management.

Participating in this Competition was an unforgettable and enriching experience. It brought together some of the brightest minds from across the region and provided a rare opportunity to engage with real-world business challenges in a high-pressure, competitive setting.

The preparation phase itself was intense and required dedication, strategic thinking, and the ability to adapt quickly. With only a limited amount of time to analyze cases and develop solutions, every moment counted. The competition pushed us to think critically, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively under pressure. It wasn’t just about finding the "right" answer—it was about presenting ideas that were innovative, practical, and aligned with long-term business goals.

One of the most valuable aspects of the experience was the exposure to diverse perspectives. Engaging with teams from other countries and receiving feedback from industry professionals helped broaden our understanding of the global business landscape. The level of professionalism, insight, and creativity displayed throughout the competition was truly inspiring.

To anyone considering applying in the future: go for it. Whether or not you win, the experience itself is life-changing. It teaches you how to think beyond textbooks, how to trust your instincts under pressure, and how to grow through challenge. If you’re willing to give it your all, you’ll walk away with more than just memories—you’ll gain skills, confidence, and a deeper sense of purpose.
