On Friday, July 11, 2025, the Fourth Joint Industry-Government-Academia Brainstorming for SDGs took place in Professor Tomonori Sudo’s class, “Introduction to Sustainable Development JA.” In this collaboration between Professor Sudo and Oita Toyopet Co., Ltd. and Sanrio Entertainment Co., Ltd., the event aimed to think about the future of Oita, Japan, and the world across generations. Approximately 140 APU students, along with about 40 guests from high schools, local governments, and companies within Oita prefecture, participated in a brainstorming session involving industry, government, and academia. In total, about 180 people took part in the event.
At the start of the session, three guest representatives delivered welcoming remarks on behalf of their organizations.
Mr. Katsuya Ono, Director of the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture at the Oita Prefectural Government, shared his thoughts on the importance of intergenerational dialogue, “I’m looking forward to hearing the ideas of young people and engaging in discussions that can help shape the future of 2050 and beyond. I hope this will lead to meaningful conversations that connect to the next generation.”
Mr. Yuji Yonawa, President of Oita Toyopet Co., Ltd., expressed his hopes for a forward-looking exchange, “Our company is transitioning from simply providing cars and products to delivering safe and comfortable mobility services. I’m excited to join a constructive dialogue that contributes to a brighter future for Oita—one filled with smiles and happiness.”
Ms. Aya Komaki, President of Sanrio Entertainment Co., Ltd., emphasized the meaning of collaboration, “Goal 17 of the SDGs ‘Partnerships for the Goals’ is truly being realized here today through this collaboration among government, industry, and academia. I hope this opportunity encourages you to think not only about the future of the world and yourselves, but also about the responsibility you carry in shaping it with hope in your hearts.”
In brainstorming session themed “The Future We Want,” students and invited guests formed mixed teams to exchange ideas and explore visions for an ideal world in 2050. The discussion followed the “World Café” format—also used in the United Nations’ SDG formulation process—which encouraged open, inclusive dialogue across diverse perspectives.
Participants engaged in thoughtful conversations spanning a wide range of topics, from local community issues to global-scale social challenges. Each group shared insights and ideas, drawing from both lived experiences and aspirational thinking.
Students who took part reflected on the experience: “It was eye-opening to hear directly from people in industries and local government—perspectives we rarely come into contact with.”
“By 2050, our generation will be leading Japan and the world. Today’s discussions made me realize how important it is to start thinking about the role we can play.”
Adding a cheerful touch to the event, Hello Kitty appeared in her SDGs-themed outfit to show support, further energizing the atmosphere and bringing smiles to participants.
In the course "Introduction to Sustainable Development JA," students aim to learn the basic concepts of sustainable development, including its definition, background, and methods, and to develop the ability to apply these concepts.
