On February 14-16, 2026, at the Jessup Moot Court Competition 2026 Japan National Rounds held at Kyoto University, the APU team won second place nationwide (Runner-up) and received a total of seven individual and team awards.

The Jessup Competition, organized by the International Law Students Association (ILSA), is known as the world’s largest and most prestigious international law moot court competition. This year’s Japan National Rounds brought together leading universities with major law faculties, including Kyoto University, The University of Tokyo, and Waseda University.

Despite competing against teams composed mainly of law students, the APU team took on advanced international law issues—such as state immunity, the protection of sacred Indigenous lands from resource exploitation, third-state intervention before the ICJ, and transnational criminal liability—and delivered impressive oral arguments that secured their second-place finish.

As a result of their outstanding performance, the team has earned the right to advance to the International Rounds, which will be held in Washington, D.C., from March 28 to April 4, 2026. At the International Rounds, universities that have won their respective national competitions compete by presenting oral arguments on a fictional case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Comment from Francis Miguel Tisbe Gregorio

Joining this competition was a very good and educational experience for me. I was able to learn about international law in depth, and with the help of my wonderful teammates, we were able to succeed in our goal of going to the international rounds. I believe APU has a lot of potential to succeed in these types of activities, and I am looking forward to being able to represent Japan and APU with my team in the international rounds.”
