Apr 28, 2025

In February 2025, APU was officially designated a Fair Trade University by the Fair Trade Forum Japan (FTFJ), a general incorporated association that promotes the principles and practices of fair trade both in Japan and globally. APU is the first university in the Kyushu region to receive this designation.
The Fair Trade University certification recognizes higher education institutions that actively support and promote fair trade. The program is based on a Japan-specific framework, adapted from international standards such as those in the UK. Introduced in Japan in 2014, this initiative has now certified seven universities nationwide, with APU being the seventh.

As part of its commitment to fostering a more sustainable society, APU adopted the APU Fair Trade Charter and has worked closely with six student organizations to promote fair trade across campus. Among them, the student group Ones’ 1 Fair Trade has played a particularly pivotal role. Active since 2006—well before the charter was established—this group has led efforts such as product sales, educational outreach, and international engagement to raise awareness and encourage fair trade practices. Their longstanding contribution was a key factor in APU’s certification.

The APU-COOP has also supported this initiative by collaborating on the planning and sale of fair trade products, further embedding fair trade values into campus life.

Message from Hiroshi Yoneyama, President of APU

Hiroshi Yoneyama

We are truly honored that APU has been recognized as Japan’s seventh Fair Trade University. This achievement reflects the proactive efforts of our students and the unique learning environment at APU, where diverse perspectives come together in meaningful ways.
Rooted in multicultural collaboration, APU has long promoted experiential, socially engaged learning in partnership with stakeholders both within and beyond the university. Through fair trade, our students are cultivating global awareness and taking tangible steps to address critical societal challenges. We take pride in knowing these initiatives are contributing to the realization of a more sustainable future.
I extend my sincere gratitude to our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the local community for their ongoing support. This recognition is not the end of our journey, but a milestone—one that reinforces our commitment to shaping a more just and sustainable world. Guided by our vision, Leap Beyond Global, we will continue to nurture changemakers who are prepared to address the world’s most urgent issues.

Message from Mr. Hiroshi Uchiyama, Representative, Fair Trade Forum Japan

Hiroshi Uchiyama

Congratulations on being designated a Fair Trade University. This recognition reflects the deep and sustained efforts by the APU community to promote and embody the values of fair trade.
Since 2006, Ones’ 1 Fair Trade has led impactful initiatives - from selling fair trade products to conducting outreach activities - while encouraging a mindset that values social and environmental responsibility. These efforts have contributed meaningfully to the broader fair trade movement.
APU’s approach - fostering action rooted in respect for human dignity within a multicultural learning environment—exemplifies the spirit of a Fair Trade University. I hope this recognition serves as a catalyst for further development and wider impact. I look forward to seeing APU’s fair trade initiatives grow and thrive, and I wish the university continued success in all its endeavors.
