Event Held at APU to Commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Japan-Korea Diplomatic Normalization

On Saturday, July 12, 2025, an event commemorating the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and South Korea was held at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU).

Hosted by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Fukuoka and supported by APU, the event focused on nurturing the next generation of leaders in Japan-Korea relations. It was held in two parts: Part 1 featured a panel discussion, and Part 2 was a special seminar on career development. The event brought together many participants, including students and university faculty and staff.

The panel discussion in Part 1 centered on two major themes: “The Current State of Korean Language Education in Japan” and “Challenges in Fostering Future Korea Specialists.” Discussions were conducted from six perspectives. The session was moderated by Associate Professor JUNG Jonghee from the Center for Language Education, with panelists including Associate Professor JU Hyunju from Fukuoka University, Assistant Professor LEE Kangwon from Seinan Gakuin University, and Professor TODOROKI Hiroshi from the College of Sustainability and Tourism. Students and faculty from APU, Beppu University, and Nippon Bunri University gathered at the venue, engaging in lively and meaningful discussions.

Vice Consul General OH Seongtak, Consul JUNG Changwon, and Consul KIM Shinkwon from the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Fukuoka were also in attendance, making it a valuable opportunity to directly witness the current state of educational exchange between Japan and Korea.

In Part 2, the afternoon session featured a special career seminar for students interested in pursuing careers across Japan and Korea. Guest speakers included professionals from KOTRA (Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency), JR Kyushu, the Nishi-Nippon Railroad Group, and Fukuya Co., Ltd., who shared insights into their respective industries, examples of how Korean language skills are applied in the workplace, and practical advice for job hunting. The seminar provided students with meaningful opportunities to connect their academic learning with real-world career paths.

This event served as a significant occasion to support the development of the next generation of leaders in Japan-Korea relations and to promote hands-on, practical education. APU will continue to provide such opportunities by working in collaboration with local and international communities, fostering student growth and mutual understanding between Japan and Korea.
