On Wednesday, July 23, 2025, two APU students, Mr. Kai Sasaki (College of Sustainability and Tourism 3rd year, Japan) and Ms. Nodoka Shima (College of International Management 3rd year, Japan), were awarded letters of appreciation by the Chief of Beppu Police Station.

In the early hours of June 26, around 1:00 a.m., the students noticed a five-year-old child walking alone on a sidewalk and entering a convenience store in the Ishigaki Higashi area. After talking with the child, they learned that the child had left home while the parents were momentarily unaware. Recognizing that the child was lost, the students asked the store clerk to call the police and handed the child over safely when the officers arrived.

Chief HANEDA praised their quick thinking, saying,
"If the students had not been there, the child could have been hit by a car or faced other dangers. Thanks to their actions, the child was safely returned to their parents. I hope they continue to help others and contribute to society."

APU President Yoneyama also expressed his gratitude, noting the university’s respect for the students’ actions. The university continues to encourage collaboration with the local community and hopes to foster an environment where students can make a positive impact.
