Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University’s (APU) career support initiative has been certified under the Program for Enhancing Employment of International Students administered by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). This certification recognizes outstanding educational programs that systematically provide Japanese language education, career education, internships, and related support to promote the employment and long-term career retention of international students in Japan.

APU is home to students from more than 120 countries and regions, including many international students who aspire to build their careers in Japan. To succeed in Japanese companies, students need not only practical Japanese language proficiency but also a strong understanding of Japanese workplace culture. The newly certified APU International Student Career Advancement Education Program is a comprehensive program designed to support international students from employment in Japanese companies through their long-term careers in Japan.

Three Pillars of the APU International Student Career Advancement Education Program

1. Systematic Japanese Language Education

The program aims to develop the practical Japanese language skills required in professional business environments. Students must complete Intermediate Japanese or above (JLPT N3 equivalent or higher) and receive practical Japanese language training prior to internships. Through these learning opportunities, students are supported in developing the language proficiency needed to contribute effectively in Japanese companies from the start of their careers.

2. Practical Career Preparation from an Early Stage

The program encourages students to proactively consider and plan their future careers from the beginning of their university experience. To complete the program, students must fulfill one of the following requirements:

• Complete the AP House Integrated Career Program, which utilizes the Living Learning experience in AP House
• Successfully complete a designated credit-bearing career course offered as part of the curriculum.

Through these pathways, students develop a clear and personalized career plan while exploring a variety of career options.

3. Practical Internships in Japan

Students are required to participate in internships at companies or organizations in Japan for a total of at least two weeks. By providing structured learning opportunities, including both pre-internship and post-internship guidance, the program helps students deepen their understanding of Japanese workplace environments and corporate culture while building a strong foundation for their future careers.

Personalized Support and Industry-Academia-Government Collaboration

The program provides personalized ongoing support tailored to each student's individual circumstances, including one-on-one consultations with specialized career advisors and mock interviews. In addition, APU promotes internship development and employer matching through partnerships with industry, academia, and government organizations. Workshops are also offered to host companies to help create environments in which international students can thrive.

Furthermore, ongoing follow-up support continues after employment, helping graduates successfully establish and sustain their careers with employers in Japan.
