On Wednesday, January 28, 2015, students from APU's First-Year Student Workshop II classes gathered for a final presentation session.

First-Year Student Workshop is a mandatory subject for all freshmen. Workshop I aims to provide students with the basic skills they need to succeed at university, such as literature survey techniques, research methods and essay writing skills, while Workshop II is designed to promote intercultural understanding between domestic and international students by making use of APU's multicultural environment.

The main theme of Workshop II changes every year, and this year's theme was "Enhancing the Skills We Need to Acquire as APU Students". With the support of Teaching Assistants (TAs), approximately 1,200 new students over two semesters planned and implemented a wide range of proposals. This year, approximately 450 sessions were held in two stages between December and January. This afforded students a chance to improve upon those things they had trouble with in the first session, thereby deepening their learning. After that, the groups gave presentations in both Japanese and English on the aims and outcomes of their respective projects. At the final presentation session, the best group presentations from each of the seven classes (32 groups each) were chosen.

Staff in charge of the workshop said, “Most of the groups appeared to successfully make their way through a process that started with group members having trouble initiating discussions then facing conflict of opinions, and ended with them deepening group solidarity. We look forward to seeing how these students put this invaluable experience to use in their next three years at APU.”
