We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to all new graduates. We applaud you on your journeys thus far.
First, let me express my heartfelt congratulations on your graduation from the prestigious Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University.
I also want to congratulate your families, who showered you with love and watched you grow, and express my gratitude to President Deguchi and all of APU's faculty and staff who provided you with steadfast guidance.
Having obtained TedQual accreditation for being a world-class provider of tourism education and research, APU is a leader in the globalization of higher education in Japan, and Oita Prefecture takes pride in the fact that it is home to APU. APU is also open to the community. By assisting with the teaching of intercultural understanding and English at elementary and junior high schools throughout the prefecture and participating in local festivals, APU has been a strong partner in the internationalization and revitalization of Oita Prefecture. Furthermore, around 120 students served as official volunteers for the 2019 Rugby World Cup, and their proactiveness contributed greatly to the tournament’s success.
APU is both a global and a local university, and you came here to study with students from approximately 90 countries and regions on a multicultural campus in order to become people who can contribute to creating the future of the Asia Pacific region. I am sure you learned many things during your time here. Now that you have graduated, I sincerely hope that you utilize the knowledge, experiences, and networks you have gained at APU to contribute greatly to the development of the Asia Pacific region in the various fields you have each chosen to enter.
Finally, I hope that you will always feel affection for Oita, a place full of fond memories for you, and serve to bridge the gap between different countries, regions, and people. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors and pray for the continued advancement of Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University.
Katsusada Hirose
Governor of Oita Prefecture

On behalf of the citizens of Beppu, please allow me to express my warmest congratulations to the graduating class of Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University and to your families as well.
Today, I am certain your hearts are full of the many fond memories you made during your time at APU.
By welcoming international students from all over the world, Beppu has grown into a truly multicultural city where people of different nationalities, ethnicities, cultures, customs, religions, and ways of thinking interact with each other. Here in Beppu, along with your classmates from around the globe, I believe you experienced the joy of achieving something, and you probably made some youthful mistakes along the way. But I am certain you made friends and memories that will last a lifetime. We, the citizens of Beppu, also cherish the deep ties you formed with us by participating in local festivals and international exchange events. Armed with these experiences and friendships, tomorrow you will step into the world, and I wish you all success.
Unfortunately, the graduation ceremony had to be cancelled to help prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, and I am sure this was a heartbreaking decision for the President and university officials to make. Beppu City has also postponed its Citizens and Students Reunion, an annual event we started last year to welcome alumni back to the city. Some alumni were scheduled to give performances and participate as volunteers, and I am sure many people were looking forward to the event, but once the situation improves, I hope you will all come back to Beppu, your “home away from home.”
In closing, as you start your new lives today, I sincerely wish you all great success and look forward to seeing you again in Beppu someday.
Yasuhiro Nagano
Mayor of Beppu
