Following decades of apartheid in South Africa, the country's first democratic elections were held on 27 April 1994 and its first democratically elected President, Nelson Mandela, was inaugurated on 10 May 1994. These watershed events marked the beginning of South Africa's evolvement into a vibrant democracy that has since achieved a number of internationally acclaimed milestones.

In April 2014, "Rainbow nation", which continues to be unique melting port of cultural and ethnic diversity in South Africa, will celebrate twenty years of Freedom. As part of celebrating the achievements of the past twenty years and addressing some of the remaining challenges that we face, the Embassy will share with APU students and the ambassador the South African story under the following topic.
